A few years ago, we began renovating the old dairy barn into a maternity/calving barn. Eden Shale hasn't had dairy cows for quite sometime now, so once they left, the dairy barn wasn't used much anymore. Much like the bull barn, the dairy barn had a number of issues - poor storm water management; poor flooring; inefficient use of space; under-utilization of existing concrete; no centralized water point; no lanes for access to multiple pastures. One of the main reasons we decided to make this barn into a calving barn is because of its location. This barn is the closest facility to our farm manager's (Greg) house. Having the barn close to Greg maximizes efficiency of his time. Dr. Higgins helped us renovate this structure to accommodate calving season and the need to have the cattle near a facility that can help improve management of the herd. Below are aerial views of what the dairy barn looked like before and after the renovations, along with a blueprint of the multi-purpose facility that the calving barn becomes.
