The University of Kentucky Beef IRM team often gets questions on how to begin an Ag enterprise on a piece of property that someone has either inherited or recently purchased. They recently started a YouTube series entitled “I Bought a Farm....Now What?”. New videos will be posted weekly, exploring the many decisions needed to transform a property into a viable beef enterprise. The next few episodes discuss methods to obtain reliable information, tips on land maintenance, and an economic analysis of different Ag enterprises suitable for a hill farm. These episodes are not lectures but rather podcast-like conversations. Episode 4 - "Enterprise Analysis" Dr. Kenny Burdine and Dr. Les Anderson discuss economic outcomes from beef enterprises for a 37 acre hill farm. Dr. Burdine also discusses several brief enterprises and does an in-depth analysis of the enterprise of choice. Episode 5 - "Forage System Development" Dr. Jeff Lehmkuhler discusses many factors used to design a rotational grazing system for the farm. Dr. Lehmkuhler uses a web soil survey to help assess the fertility of the soil and maps out the forage plan for the heifer development system. Comments are closed.
