Did you know that some of the practices used at Eden Shale Farm qualify for the On-Farm Water Management Program??

The On-Farm Management Program (OFWM) provides funding for Land-Grant and Regional Universities, Non-Profits and Kentucky farm families to financially incentivize better water management practices across the Commonwealth.

Here are a few of the practices at Eden Shale Farm that can be implemented on your farm, with the help of this program:

Calving Barn

The water harvesting method at the Calving Barn uses above ground cisterns to collect water runoff from the roof. The water is then gravity fed into the nearby tire waterer.

Bull Barn

The water harvesting practice at the Bull Barn uses underground cisterns to collect water from the roof. A solar panel and pump is used to transfer the water from the cisterns to a water tower, which is used to gravity feed two tire waterers. The water tower was placed inside of an existing corn silo to protect the water tank against the sun.

Silo and 4-Way Tire Waterer

The water harvesting method at our Heifer Barn is similar to the method used at the Bull Barn. Water is collected from the roof into two cisterns, then is pumped into the silo for storage. From there, the water is gravity fed out to the four-way tire waterer.

Spring Development

We developed a spring and utilized a tire waterer to give the cattle access to fresh water from two separate pastures. This spring development solved three things: (1) eliminated an old pond that was hazardous to the cattle, (2) dried up a problematic wet spot in a pasture, and (3) provided cattle with a clean, free water source year round.
